About Us

The Centre for Tribal and Rural Development (CTRD) Trust is a dedicated voluntary organization that was established in 1988. It is registered under the Indian Trust Act in the state of Tamil Nadu. For three decades we have been working on projects and programs that aim to promote and strengthen the livelihood, welfare and development of the marginalized and discriminated tribal and rural communities of the Nilgiri District. Hereby, we are both supporting livelihood programs (i.e.house constructions, infrastructure or health care improvements) and empowering their capabilities by introducing new possibilities of income generation and Self-Help Groups. Cooperating directly with the diverse communities, our professional team members use their skills, knowledge and long working experience to overcome the circumstances of poverty and marginalization. Every project is realized witha Help to Self-Help, holistic and Bottom-Up Approach in accordance to the tribal people’s resources, needs, cultures and traditions. Generally, our work is financed through donations and funding received from government bodies and civil society organizations from all around the world.

Our Beginning

In 1988 RS.Ranganathen founded CTRD in response to the impoverished socio economic conditions which prevailed within the indigenous tribal and rural communities living in the remote Nilgiris District of Tamil Nadu, India. A lack of water supply, housing and sanitation facilities, food security, health services, education or regular income does only represent a small amount of the Adivasi’s daily struggles.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide tribal and rural communities with the appropriate tools and knowledge to help themselves. The focus is on comprehensive and inclusive health, education and livelihood training in order to promote sustainable economic well-being, equality and basic human rights for all, regardless of gender, age and ability.!

Our Vision

Our vision is the realization of empowered self-reliant tribal and rural communities with improved socio-economic conditions without damaging their cultural and environmental identity.!

Our Mandate

At this time and even at present, no governmental program has been supporting the livelihood, welfare and development of the Adivasi. CTRD can be regarded as one of the prior NGOs which did not look away and took immediate action to improve the livelihood and bring basic human rights to these marginalized groups. !

Our Plans

We are situated in the Nilgiri District of Tamil Nadu, at the junction between the states Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka which are also called the Blue Mountains. It can be regarded as a remote region being covered by hills, mountains, forests, tribal villages and tea estates with a cool climate. Geographically, our works takes place in the following four areas of the Nilgiris District: Gudalur, Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri. In these blocks, we support 4 municipalities, 11 town panchayat and 35 village panchayat of the Nilgiris district.!
